WHY THIS CONFERENCE?
The population of most of our major towns and cities is rising rapidly, putting increasing pressure on local authorities and their partners to act decisively to tackle the housing shortage. With political leaders as reluctant as ever to encroach into the green belt, land for development is in short supply. As a consequence, national, city-regional and local government is keen to maximise sites’ potential to accommodate more new homes in urban areas.
But this comes with its own set of challenges, from finding suitable sites and meeting planning requirements to creating and delivering desirable places where local communities actually want to live. How can we achieve the right balance between quality and viability when bringing forward high density housing?
WHAT WILL BE COVERED?
The agenda will include:
- An update on the London Plan from James Murray , Deputy Mayor of London for Housing and Residential Development
- Expert advice on how planning authorities can set design quality requirements for high density homes and how applicants can show that they are meeting them.
- Best practice examples of dealing with the most pressing viability challenges pertaining to high density schemes - learn from four case studies of successful high density regeneration schemes across London. Blackwall Reach in East London, The Scene in Walthamstow, South Kilburn and Wembley
- Further case studies on maximising land use as well as winning local and political support for high density regeneration projects
This conference will bring together key stakeholders within the housing sector, including government and city-regional policy-makers, urban strategists, local planning authorities, architects, housebuilders and those advising them to provide practical solutions and innovative approaches to those challenges through best practice examples of high quality high density schemes.
