Shadow cast over reforms

Government proposals to simplify planning will lead to uncertainty and confusion, the RTPI has warned.

The caution came in the institute's response to DCLG consultation on permitted development rights for non-residential sites, which closed last week.

RTPI acting director of policy and partnerships Matt Thomson commented: "The latest proposals for small-scale, non-domestic developments suggest that the government has not thought through the implications."

He also warned that the introduction of prior approval procedures would "shift rather than reduce the workload of planning officers".
