Atkins gains busway work

Atkins has been commissioned to help deliver a guided busway scheme in Bedfordshire.

The firm will offer project management support and site supervision for the Luton-Dunstable guided busway, which has planning permission under the Transport and Works Act 1998. The busway, which will use a dedicated track, is set to be completed in 2012.

"Guided bus systems are relatively new to the UK, even though Atkins' work on the world's longest system in Cambridgeshire is nearing completion," Atkins project director Nick Coward said.

"The Luton scheme is to be built on a disused railway line. Challenges will include building a crossing over the M1 and replacing bridges in the town centre."
