Package sets carbon goal

Consultants have claimed that emissions from transport could be cut by a quarter by 2020 if the government takes swift action.

A package developed by MTRU and sponsored by the Campaign for Better Transport (CFBT) focuses on business travel, freight and switching local car journeys to walking and cycling.

Longer-term measures include a national travelcard, parking controls in developments, changes in planning guidance and tax changes to reward low-carbon travel.

The CFBT said current government policies will achieve less than a five per cent cut by 2020. The package could reduce car traffic by 15 per cent and regenerate communities, it asserted.
