Firm lodges hospice plan

Muir Smith Evans (MSE) is advising on a £20 million redevelopment of an Edinburgh hospice to upgrade outdated facilities.

The Scottish-based consultancy has lodged applications for planning and listed building consent with Edinburgh City Council for St Columba Hospice, located in the Granton area.

The 1970s 30-bed unit needs to be rebuilt to offer better facilities and more single-bed rooms to care for patients with advanced progressive illnesses.

A more extensive out-patient service will be also developed and the hospice's education programme expanded with the acquisition of adjacent land.

MSE director Robert Evans said the ambitious and sensitive scheme was subject to extensive pre-application consultations with the council, Historic Scotland and the local community.
