Broader energy vision urged in nuclear development strategy

The RTPI is urging the government to develop a more integrated approach to energy planning in its response to the draft national policy statement (NPS) on the strategic siting assessment and criteria for nuclear development.

"A national policy should take a broad strategic approach to the security of energy supply, diversity and response to our carbon challenge," said RTPI policy director Rynd Smith. "It would explain why nuclear power has a role in the energy mix and establish the basis for the scale of generation that the NPS will provide for," he added. The RTPI supports in principle the need for a strategic siting assessment process and the development of siting criteria for new stations. It suggests, however, that a transparent vision for the future of the energy sector would provide certainty for stakeholders. It is also essential to enable the government to ensure that broader climate change objectives can be met within relevant timescales.
