Local government minister writes to council leaders

Local government minister John Healey has written to council leaders urging them to use a legal power to promote the economic, social and environmental well-being of their area during the downturn.

Research commissioned by the DCLG shows that fewer than one in 12 councils are using a discretionary right to take action other than raising taxes to improve their area.
