Joint network is set up by RTPI and Chartered Institute of Housing

The joint RTPI and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) planning for housing network was launched earlier this month by John Callcutt, author of an independent review of house building for the government.

Callcutt emphasised the importance of private and public sector practitioners working together. "Working in partnership with the private sector is the only way that we will save our cities and countryside and make any inroads into meeting the targets for new homes that we so desperately need," he said.

Welcoming the new network, RTPI secretary-general Robert Upton said: "There is a great deal of expertise in the membership of the two institutions and the chance to explore this will benefit both parties." CIH chief executive Sarah Webb commented: "I firmly believe in professionalism and expertise. But I do not believe in professional silos and I will not have housing professionals being a barrier to the sustainable communities agenda, so I am absolutely delighted that we've got this network."

The network has set up a website, www.planningforhousing.co.uk, to act as an online forum and enable the sharing of information.
