Rail line wins designation

The North Staffordshire Line between Crewe and Derby via Stoke-on-Trent was designated a community rail service this week.

The designation, announced by transport minister Lord Adonis, allows a more flexible approach from operating company East Midlands Trains and the local community rail partnership. This enables them together to manage the service with greater emphasis on meeting local needs.

Adonis said: "It means that local communities can become even more involved in how these services run and encourage more passengers to use them."

The community rail development strategy seeks new ways to operate branch lines. To date, 17 lines and services have been designated.
