Ski slope set for upgrade

One of Europe's longest ski slopes could be upgraded as part of planning gain from a development near Edinburgh being advised on by Farningham McCreadie.

The firm, part of White Young Green, has lodged an outline application for a leisure centre and hotel scheme with Midlothian Council on behalf of Calderstones Land. The proposal also features a conference centre and holiday accommodation.

The council owns the snow sport complex at Hillend that includes the 400m dry ski slope. It wants to increase tourism in the area to boost its economy.

Farningham McCreadie said the developer could "directly contribute to funding improvements to significantly upgrade the snow sport facilities at Hillend, securing its long-term future as a centre of excellence".

An environmental impact assessment is in progress and the application is expected to be considered in the new year.
