Further golf bid approved

A second major golf complex in Aberdeenshire has been backed by Scottish ministers just days after they granted approval for Donald Trump's resort at Balmedie.

The £115 million project is fronted by former British Open champion Paul Lawrie and includes 280 houses and a hotel on the Blairs Seminary site south-west of Aberdeen.

Unlike the Trump scheme it won outline consent from Aberdeenshire Council, despite breaching the local plan, on the strength of the economic and tourism benefits it would bring. Developer Muir Group predicts that 1,000 jobs could be created.

Ministers last week decided to accept the council's decision without calling in the scheme. A detailed application will be prepared over the next 12 months.
