Designers are to work with the Home Office to try to make safety integral to the design of public spaces.

The £1.6 million initiative, launched by home secretary Jacqui Smith and the Design Council, will bring together planners, public bodies, designers and crime prevention specialists. Work on housing will be led by forensic psychologist and University College London professor Ken Pease.
