Scots review marine plans

The Scottish Government is to launch a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of offshore wind power to keep developments consistent.

It follows a call for applications for offshore wind projects from the Crown Estate. Fourteen developers have applied for 23 potential sites in Scottish waters.

The Crown Estate expects to have evaluated the proposals by next month. Successful applicants will be given exclusive development rights to a given area, subject to a favourable SEA.

"By carrying out an SEA of territorial waters now, we can ensure that there is a clear approach to enabling development that is consistent with environmental protection and sustainable development," said energy minister Jim Mather. The SEA is expected to be completed in the next 12 months.
