Blears allows towers plan

Communities secretary Hazel Blears last week approved a mixed-use scheme including a residential tower in north London against an inspector's advice.

The proposal from developer LMS would see the demolition of existing buildings to allow redevelopment including the 39-storey tower and a nine-storey office block on land at the junction of City Road and Old Street in Islington.

Blears disagreed with the inspector's conclusion that the proposed office building would "have a scale and perceived mass inappropriate to the street scene".

In granting permission, she said she "considered the architectural diversity and different building heights of the surrounding area, including those in and bordering the conservation area".
