It said leafier streets could take the heat off major towns and cities in the region. University of Manchester research found that increasing urban tree cover by just ten per cent could keep maximum summer temperatures at their present level.
Hull, Leeds and Sheffield are all likely to be surveyed. This may give councils incentives to promote urban tree planting in these cities, the commission added.
