Urban expansion agreed at quarry site

The secretary of state is minded to accept an inspector's recommendation to grant permission for various housing proposals on 40ha of land in Bedfordshire subject to completion of an appropriate legal agreement.

The plan featured around 1,320 dwellings, infrastructure and open space. Although an overhead power line crossed part of the site, the secretary of state was satisfied that an adequate layout could be achieved without needing it to be diverted underground.

Part of the land was occupied by a sand quarry. The secretary of state agreed that adequate protection measures could be put in place to ensure that the housing development only went ahead once quarrying was complete and the land restored to enable its use for open space and other community purposes.
