Sector given security role

Planners will have to encourage security measures in new schemes as part of the fight against terrorism, Whitehall announced this week.

In a House of Commons statement, prime minister Gordon Brown said local authorities should look at methods of protecting against terror attacks as part of performance frameworks.

He added: "We will work with architects and planners to encourage them to design measures such as safe areas and blast-resistant materials into new buildings."

The move came after security minister Lord West was asked to hasten anti-terrorism plans earlier this year.
