Peaks quarry bid rejected

Government inspectors have upheld a decision by the Peak District National Park Authority to prevent unauthorised limestone extraction at a quarry on Bradwell Moor.

The authority took enforcement action in 2005 against two firms that wanted to sell limestone extracted at Smalldale Head quarry to reach fluorspar and lead.

A planning permission from 1951 allows extraction of these but the authority said limestone must be kept on-site for use as backfill. A public inquiry was held after High Peak Spar Ltd and Ernest Hinchliffe Ltd appealed the original decision.
