Young Associates has 18 staff operating from offices in Chester and Edinburgh and experience in ecological assessment, habitat creation and managing large-scale environmental impact assessments (EIAs).
AMEC said the takeover reflects the growing market for ecology and EIA work. Earth and environmental business executive vice-president Jim Beechinor explained: "The environmental services market provides a growth opportunity. Offices in the north will provide high-quality specialist services across the UK."
Young Associates managing director Lyn Young said the merger would open up opportunities for the firm's environmental specialists.
