President congratulates North East at regional awards

On his visit to the North East last month, RTPI president Jim Claydon announced the winners of the region's awards for planning achievement.

Planning Aid North was commended for its education support programme for young people in the north, which has already benefited 18,000 youngsters in North and South Tyneside, Newcastle and County Durham. Claydon said: "to combat climate change and inequalities in society we must interest even the youngest in the contribution that good planning can make. The Planning Education for Young People initiative is a brilliant example of what can be achieved by approaching the subject in an accessible and exciting way. It is a worthy winner of the regional award." South Tyneside Council was commended for work on its local development framework, the first in the North East to reach the stage of having an adopted core strategy.
