DPP to argue market case

DPP has been drafted in by English Heritage to argue its case against the redevelopment of London's Smithfield Market, which faces a public inquiry next month.

The controversial scheme aims to demolish the market building and redevelop the Red House Cold Store, one of the earliest surviving examples of its type.

The proposal includes a large steel and glass office that would sit alongside Victorian buildings.

DPP will argue that the existing buildings are important to the city's heritage and alternative forms of regeneration can be found.

The inquiry is likely to continue into early next year with a final decision expected before the summer.
