Lawyers help on retail deal

Law firm SJ Berwin has advised Marks & Spencer on its agreement to take a 125-year lease on an anchor store in Portsmouth's Northern Quarter development.

The 7,400m2 store, set to open in 2011, will replace an existing one on Commercial Road. John Lewis has agreed to be an anchor tenant at the other end of the scheme, which is being developed by Centros Miller.

SJ Berwin real estate partner William Boss led the legal team advising Marks & Spencer. Associate Mark Mallon and partner Duncan Field offered guidance on planning issues.
