Stormont to examine town centres

Town centre regeneration will be the subject of the first inquiry by Northern Ireland's social development committee.

The committee - which operates independently of the Department of Social Development - plans to report to the assembly on the topic by March 2008.

It will assess the effectiveness of policies adopted by the department.

The committee will examine how to ensure that regeneration in town centres is not carried out to the detriment of the surrounding area.
