City tops list of fly-tippers

Nearly half of all reported fly-tipping cases came from Liverpool City Council in the past year, figures published by DEFRA have revealed.

The results for April 2006 to March 2007 show a five per cent increase in fly-tipping cases, with more than 2.6 million incidents.

Enforcement action taken by local authorities outside Liverpool rose by 46 per cent. The figure including the city is 16 per cent. Waste minister Joan Ruddock said: "There is too much fly-tipping blighting our streets."
