Quays in line for renewal

Gateshead Council has produced a planning brief for the first part of phase two of the town's quayside renewal.

The brief for the Hawks Road and South Shore Road sites on the bank of the River Tyne includes shops, hotels, pubs, restaurants and leisure facilities. Housing and office space will be included later.

The design is based on a strategy by Urban Initiatives that aims to create links to the rest of Gateshead Quays and the town centre. A public consultation on the brief runs until next month.

South Shore Road is part of a site owned by the council, while the Hawks Road site is privately owned. It lies next to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the Sage and Millennium Bridge, all of which were part of the first phase of development.
