Lord Heseltine reiterates call for directly elected mayors

Tory cities task force chairman Lord Heseltine reiterated his call for directly elected mayors in his speech to the Conservative Party conference this week.

The idea emerged from his proposals earlier this year for devolving powers from central government (Planning, 22 June, p2). Heseltine criticised the money spent by quangos such as the regional development agencies and called for more local initiatives.
