Birmingham set for tower

Plans to create a world-class landmark tower at Arena Central in Birmingham were unveiled at property show MIPIM in Cannes this week.

The 50-storey V Building is being developed by Dandara, with a design team led by architect Eric Kuhne, at the south-eastern edge of the Arena Central development. The structure would stand next to the 27-storey Alpha Tower, one of the city's tallest landmarks.

The mixed-use scheme, which will be submitted for planning permission next month, features bars, restaurants and an observatory at the top of the tower. It also includes 600 flats, a spa, resident's library and private reception rooms, including an exclusive club room. The building's exterior will be clad with latticed glass with luminescent qualities, enabling it to shine in the day and glow at night.

The V Building aims to be the centrepiece for Arena Central, which has outline planning permission for 185,800m2 of mixed-use space and is the largest regeneration scheme in the city core.

Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby commented: "The V Building will be an iconic building for the city of Birmingham, enhancing our skyline."

Kuhne added: "The local planning authority has recognised how important symbolic tall structures are to the international reputation of major cities. My personal ambition was to give Birmingham the same level of recognition that the Sears Building gave Chicago."
