Manual set to help progress design codes

A government guide on design codes for better quality development was published last week.

The guide, produced with the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, aims to provide a manual for local authorities, developers and other stakeholders on the preparation and use of design codes. It sets out good practice examples in England and internationally.

The DCLG said that the codes will be key to delivering the objective of PPS3, published last week (Planning, 1 December, p1), to improve housing quality.

The use of design codes has increased under a three-year government pilot scheme that focused on developments in Harlow, Northampton, Rotherham, Aldershot and Swindon.
