Bradford aims to regenerate canal district

Plans to reopen a 5km stretch of canal in Bradford were unveiled this week at MIPIM, the international property conference in Cannes, France.

A study by Arup testing the feasibility of reopening the Leeds and Bradford Canal shows that it would create an opportunity to develop a mix of uses along the route from the city centre to Shipley. The consultancy claims that the project could create up to 5,000 homes.

The work links with proposals by developer Magellan Properties to create an urban village along the waterway (Planning, 9 December 2005, p5).

Speaking to Planning, Bradford City Council's regeneration portfolio holder Simon Cooke said that the scheme's potential is enormous. "Reopening the canal would bring together regeneration work and create better links," he commented.
