Guide advises developers on climate issue

A guide for developers on how to adapt buildings for climate change was issued by London mayor Ken Livingstone this week.

The guide, launched at the Thames Gateway Forum, outlines features such as reflective surfaces, shading and green roofs as means for coping with hotter summer weather. It also suggests water-efficient appliances and rainwater harvesting.

The document was drawn up by the London Climate Change Partnership, Sustainable Development Round Table for the East of England and the South East Climate Change Partnership.

Livingstone said: "We cannot sit back and start thinking about adapting our buildings in 50 years' time. We need to act now. The checklist is one of the ways we are working to ensure that London adapts to the expected impacts of climate change."
