A rapid transit system to be built

A rapid transit system that carries passengers in driverless pods is to be built at Heathrow Airport in a pilot programme. Arup will design the infrastructure for the electric-powered urban light transport system, which is scheduled to be operational by 2008. Developed by Advanced Transport Systems for BAA, the pods will link Terminal 1 to an outer parking area in around four minutes, compared to the current 20-minute wait and travel time through airport traffic. The system can ferry up to 4,800 passengers an hour.
