Casebook: Appeal case - Community facilities - Charity box held no threat to conservation area

The siting of a charity donation container next to a war memorial in an Aberdeenshire conservation area has been endorsed by a reporter who decided that it did not harm the area's character.

The black container was designed in the shape of an upturned torpedo. The appellant claimed that its slim shape and siting would not be out of place or incongruous. The reporter agreed, finding that it would add to the visual interest of the memorial and its garden. He judged that it would not be unexpected or out of place and would preserve the character of the conservation area.
