Developer hands out cash to locals

One guaranteed way to raise publicity for a regeneration scheme is to give away money, and that is exactly what developer Oakmayne did in south London's Elephant and Castle last week.

More than 300 £5 notes were stuck to the side of the South Central Building, which Oakmayne is redeveloping as part of a £1.5 billion renewal project that involves demolishing the infamous pink shopping centre.

The developer was giving away £1,540 to encourage local residents to invest in the area. It also donated £1,000 to homelessness agency and housing association St Mungo's. It is understood that a schoolboy, a cleaner and a bin man were among the lucky recipients of crisp new fivers.
