Costa del Thames gains permission

South Bank on Sea has been given planning permission. The South Bank Centre and Back Row Events will now be able to build a beach and outdoor cinema on the banks of the Thames.

Efforts to rival the artificial seashore by the Seine in Paris faltered in June when the London Borough of Lambeth failed to make a decision on the proposal. But last week the applicants got the green light for an urban beach, open cinema, beach bar, barbecues and sports activities.

"We feel that this exciting project will be of immense benefit to many local residents and will give another much-needed activity to the area in the summer break," says Natalie Bell of SE1 United, which represents local youth groups.
