Tooting twinned with crater on Mars

Think of Tooting and planners of a certain vintage will recall the BBC sitcom Citizen Smith, featuring Robert Lindsay as the leader of a revolutionary Marxist clique that never quite managed to do for the south London suburb what Che Guevara did for Cuba.

Tooting is now very much out of this world thanks to former resident Peter Mouginis-Mark, an NASA scientist. He has named a crater on the red planet after Tooting, although the comparisons end there. Measuring around 28km, the crater is somewhat larger than its namesake.

But Tooting MP Sadiq Khan is over the moon. "This is getting a lot of attention because of its twinning to our fantastic area and because this is probably the youngest large meteorite crater on Mars," he says. "For those of us living in Tooting, it has confirmed what we have always known. Tooting is the centre of the universe."
