Greens slam stingy US foreign policy

Enraged environmentalists are ganging up on the US embassy in London following revelations that it has refused to pay £157,000 in congestion charge fines.

Transport for London figures show that the embassy accumulated a whopping 455 penalty notices in September alone. But the embassy argues that the charge is a tax and claims that it is exempt under the terms of an international convention.

Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Green Party will present the stubborn diplomats with a list of 5,000 combinations of vehicle type and conversion possibilities that would exempt them from the charge. London Assembly Green Party member Jenny Jones says: "If they do not want to use public transport, the least they could do is drive zero-emission vehicles."
