Stop quarrying at Backdale Quarry demanded by the CPRE

Immediate action to stop quarrying at Backdale Quarry is being demanded by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). Operator Merrimans has permission from the Peak District National Park Authority to remove small quantities of limestone to extract the vein mineral fluorspar from the quarry at Longstone Edge near Bakewell. But the CPRE claims that half a million tonnes of limestone have been removed while less than 10,000 tonnes of fluorspar have been extracted. A public inquiry opened last week but was adjourned until next year. The park authority is due to meet today to discuss the case.
