North East Regional Assembly pledges support to proposals

The North East Regional Assembly has pledged its support to proposals to expand deep-sea container facilities at Teesport in a letter to transport minister Stephen Ladyman this week. Teesport owner PD Ports is proposing to direct container traffic from southern ports to the North East. But ministers are still deciding whether to approve plans to expand east coast ports at Felixstowe and Bathside Bay. If these go ahead, the assembly fears that it will affect the viability of the Teesport proposals, which it argues are vital to the region's economy.
