Stars from the theatre performance brought along their own reminder of the dangers of over-reliance on four-wheeled transport - Cinderella's carriage. Remembering how Cinderella was forced to walk home after her conveyance reverted to a pumpkin, the council is looking for ways to make it easier for staff to leave their cars at home.
The campaign aims to reduce council employees' car use by 15 per cent over the next five years while increasing bus use by 15 per cent and car sharing by 33 per cent. Gateshead will offer staff incentives to use greener ways to travel to work, including interest-free loans for seasonal bus and rail tickets, car sharing schemes, improved travel information and cycling facilities.
