Strategy sets out blueprint for North East

The North East Regional Assembly has begun a consultation exercise on its 20-year regional spatial strategy (RSS).

The strategy aims to tackle housing, transport and economic development issues and seeks to make the most of the region's culture and environment.

It includes proposals to set aside 4,700ha for employment uses and increase house building to 10,000 homes a year by 2011. The RSS also aspires to ensure that ten per cent of the region's electricity comes from renewable sources by 2010.

Assembly chairman Bob Gibson said the draft RSS is a working document.

"Its recommendations are not set in stone," he added. Consultation will run until February 2005.
