UK Coal to cover mining problems

UK Coal is to set aside millions of pounds to cover problems with planning permission for mining works. In its trading update for July to October, the company says that the refusal of permission for coaling works could lead to additional costs of up to £16 million this year. Following rejection of an application to extend operations at its Stobswood site in Northumberland, UK Coal has had to reserve £11 million of its profits to fund remedial works. An additional £5 million may be needed if the firm cannot find an economic use for the plant.
