FoE demand Kilroot closure

Plans to install equipment to reduce acid rain at a power station in Northern Ireland are being opposed by environmental campaigners. Friends of the Earth (FoE) has demanded the closure of the coal-fired Kilroot plant in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, by 2010. The group objects to a planning application by AES Kilroot Power Ltd to install equipment to reduce the gases responsible for acid rain that would ensure its survival until 2025. FoE argues that the equipment increases emissions that cause climate change.
