Ministers get route change for Crossrail

Changes to the proposed route for London's Crossrail link were sent to ministers this week.

Cross London Rail Links Ltd (CLRL) has decided that trains should terminate at Abbey Wood in the scheme's south-east section. CLRL has asked transport secretary Alistair Darling to put forward the route in the project's proposed hybrid bill.

In an earlier scheme backed by CLRL in July, four out of every 24 trains running each hour would have continued on from Abbey Wood to Ebbsfleet.

But CLRL now accepts that this could cause delay because Crossrail trains would have to contend with north Kent services also leaving the station.

Instead, platform improvements at Abbey Wood will ensure a smooth connection for passengers wishing to travel on to and from north Kent.
