BAA confirms capital airport road scheme

Plans for a road link to Edinburgh Airport are to be submitted early next year, it emerged this week.

The route from the Gogar roundabout would be a single carriageway but could be made into a dual carriageway later. It is thought necessary because the current road access becomes congested at peak times and public transport improvement is at least five years away.

Airport operator BAA confirmed that an application is due to be submitted to Edinburgh City Council in February or March. Details of the scheme emerged halfway through the Scottish Executive's six-week consultation on the proposed Edinburgh Airport rail link. The £500 million project is due to be completed in 2010, a year after the airport is to be linked to the city centre by a tram route.
