Talks start on travel scheme in Sunderland

Plans for £110 million worth of transport investment and a bridge over the River Wear in Sunderland were unveiled for public consultation this week.

A strategic transport corridor stretching from the A19 trunk road through the city is planned to maximise development of urban regeneration company (URC) Sunderland Arc's key regeneration sites. These include Farringdon Row, Riverside Park, the Vaux brewery and Holmeside.

The consultation also includes plans for cycle routes, bus lanes and road improvements. Sunderland Arc head of operations David Walker said: "Good access around the city will be key to any potential investor."

The consultation exercise also canvasses views on a bridge over the Wear.

Sunderland City Council and the URC have identified possible locations next to Riverside Park at Claxheugh and nearer the city centre at Deptford.
