Casebook: Appeal cases - Community facilities - Energy development - Wind farm upgrade allowed in protected area

A proposal for eight 2MW wind turbines in the Forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) has been permitted as an acceptable replacement of ten smaller turbines.

The proposal involved dispersing the structures over a larger area of moorland pasture. The inspector took the view that this redistribution would not compromise the qualities and objectives of the AONB. Moreover, he considered that the sevenfold increase in electricity generation allowed by the scheme would play an important role in meeting regional renewable energy targets.
