Liverpool tram scheme saved by climbdown

Liverpool's Merseytram project is back on track following a last-minute climbdown last week in a row that had jeopardised the entire scheme.

Liverpool City Council had demanded that Line 2 of the network be rerouted to bring forward the city's airport link by two years (Planning, 8 October, p6). But the council withdrew the demand after recognising that it jeopardised Merseytram's plans for Line 1 of the network from the city centre to Kirkby, which has secured government funding.

The council asked Merseytravel to proceed instead with current proposals for the line, which links the city centre to Whiston Hospital. Liverpool executive member for regeneration Peter Millea said: "Businesses want this link, but if our response to the consultation is in the way of the scheme, we will stand aside."
