Halman on ... sad neglect of a scarce transport success story

Deputy prime minister John Prescott made a huge play of the announcement in 2000 that the government was pledging its support for a major extension of Manchester's Metrolink light rail system, with further lines planned to serve the city-region to Oldham, Trafford Park and the airport. Last month transport secretary Alistair Darling failed to bury the bad news that this pledge was being reversed. Civic leaders throughout the North West were incensed and a major protest campaign was launched.
