IN BRIEF: Creation of independent agency

The creation of an independent agency to deal with rural issues was confirmed by environment secretary Margaret Beckett this week. The agency, recommended by Lord Haskins in last November's rural delivery review, will combine work carried out by English Nature, the Countryside Agency and DEFRA's rural development service. Beckett said it will be established as a "non-departmental public body" to work on biodiversity, resource protection and landscape improvements.
