OPINION: Fyson on ... a particularly good week for the north

The north did well last week. Deputy prime minister John Prescott unveiled his progress report on the northern urban renaissance and Newcastle's Grainger Town won the top prize in the RTPI's annual awards. Speaking in Manchester, Prescott adopted the concept of a northern growth area across the Pennines using motorways to Yorkshire and Tyneside. There, with perfect timing, the cup-winning project demonstrated how a six-year programme can revive a rundown city quarter. Exemplary physical and economic restoration has created a thriving and attractive area where once there was only decline.
